Goat technologies pitched during Halal Goat FIESTA

A technology pitching on goat was conducted during the Halal Goat Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and technology Agenda (FIESTA) at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) in Davao City held on October 16-17, 2019.

The activity was attended by farmers and investors from Region I, II, III, XI, and XII.

Among the presenters were Mr. Neal A. Del Rosario of Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Dr. Jonathan N. Nayga of Isabela State University (ISU), Ms. Ivy Mar B. Babornida of University of Southern Mindanao (USM), and Dr. Anabella G. Valdez of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU).

Mr. Del Rosario presented the technology, Pelletizing Machine and Forage-based Pellets. He mentioned that the technology was developed to address low productivity and high mortality in the goat industry.

According to Mr. Del Rosario, the machine was designed for production of forest-based pellets for goats. It is capable of producing the Sure Feeds (SFEED) Pellet Feeds.

A cheaper alternative to imported feeds, the pelletized feed is a palatable and nutritionally balanced feed that enhances productivity in goat, he added.

Another technology to reduce bulkiness of forages, the Portable Hay Baler was also presented by Del Rosario. It compacts dried grasses, legumes, and other herbaceous plants for animals. He added that the technology has low investment cost, low maintenance, and is suited for smallhold production.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nayga presented Semen Processing on Goat using SemEx. He discussed SemEx as a powdered semen extender formulation that uses soybean lecithin instead of egg yolk to protect the spermatozoa. He also noted its effectiveness with lengthened viability under refrigerated storage and increased post thaw motility.

Using SemEx, one ejaculation of a buck can be used to breed 10 to 15 does, he added.

Chevon processing was another topic tackled during the technology pitching. According to Dr. Nayga, the brand of chevon products, Chevon Valley Products, are a set of products with high nutritional value without any preservatives. These products, he added, has a shelf-life of more than one year.

Chevon Valley Products include canned ‘kalderetang kambing,’ ‘adobong kambing,’ and ‘kilawing kambing.’

Also under the brand Chevon Valley Products, Dr. Valdez introduced their set of chevon dishes in a pouch with ‘sisig,’ bulgogi, and ‘sinampalukan’ flavors. Packed in retortable stand up pouches, the products may be dipped in boiling water for 15 minutes before eating.

Ms. Cabornida, meanwhile, presented Halal Processed Chevon. She highlighted other products for goat such as chevon ‘tocino,’ chevon ‘tapa,’ and corned chevon. She also noted that chevon has lower cholesterol compared to other meat products.

The technology pitching was conducted during the 1st day of the Halal Goat FIESTA.
